A Place Called Home is a nonprofit organization founded in 1993 to serve the youth of South Central Los Angeles. Originally started in a church basement with a membership of twelve kids, APCH now helps more than 300 children and teens a day through a myriad of programs, including college prep courses, dance and art classes, organized sports, dropout recovery services, and hands-on work in their gardens and kitchen.
There are so many services that APCH provides to improve the lives and well-being of the youth community. One standout is their Health, Nutrition, and Well-Being program, which provides true “farm-to-table” education for kids of all ages through on-site garden work, kitchen preparation, and healthy meal planning. APCH places a special focus on promoting smarter eating habits; they offer cooking classes and free access to healthy meals on their campus. The kitchen serves over 4,000 freshly cooked meals every month, and also supplies families in need with groceries.
For Monbrigo’s inaugural project, we are excited to work with APCH to help create a Project Garden that will benefit their already stellar gardening and nutrition programs. Monbrigo’s mission is to work closely with local organizations that provide health and food education to communities in need, and APCH is a shining example.
